Chapter Eleven

The next morning was another early one for Maggie. She didn’t have to be at the shop as early as she’d arrived, but after a while, her body started getting used to waking up at a certain time. The idea of sleeping in was mostly long gone from her world.

She hadn’t told any of her staff about her deal with Gretchen, so for the first day, the extra work was on her and truthfully, she didn’t mind all that much. She often thought about how much her life had changed, going from being alone but lonely, to being alone and able to enjoy the time to herself.

She started the day making the donut hole trees. It was what she was most excited about and since Gretchen said the guests weren’t arriving until nearly lunch time, she had plenty of time to get it all done. After having spent quite a bit of time researching the trees, she realized that she’d need Styrofoam cones for the center of the trees, so she made sure to stop at the store after leaving Gretchen’s the night before. She’d picked up ten of them, knowing it was probably too many, but not being able to help herself.

Maggie wrapped three of the cones in tin foil, two for Gretchen and one for herself, and used a small amount of white icing to stick the cone to a large plate. She used the donuts she’d made the night before for her own tree and made a fresh batch for Gretchen’s guests. One by one, she stabbed toothpicks into the tree and stuck a donut hole on each one. After she completed the tree for herself, she decided it looked a bit plain, so she drizzled green icing over the donut holes and added a few red sprinkles for decoration. She did the same for the other trees but added extra sprinkles and piped some frosting onto a few of the donuts.

She stepped back and was admiring her handiwork when Ruby walked in through the back door, her face twisted in amazement. “What are you doing here?”

Maggie knew her secret donut hole trees were no longer a secret, but she was more surprised that Ruby was there. “I could ask you the same question.” She laughed.

“What are those?” Ruby asked, heading straight for the prep table where Maggie had been working.

“Just a little something I’ve been working on.”

“A little something? Maggie, they’re beautiful!” Ruby exclaimed, bending down to get a better look. “You came here on your day off to make these? Why didn’t you tell me? I would have been happy to come in and help.”

“I’m not just here for that. I came in for Gretchen. It’s why she wanted to see me last night,” Maggie explained as she washed her hands.

“Okay, I drove by on my way to the store and I saw your car. What did Gretchen want? Are you going to tell me?” Ruby hung her coat and stood next to Maggie.

She laughed out loud.
